The increasing information density on the Internet has required a substantial rise in data transmission rates in associated electronic equipment. This in turn gives rise to a bottleneck problem in the electrical backplane because the data rate over backplane copper lines is limited to 10 Gbps over one meter of track length due to physical and technological reasons.

With optical planar waveguides made from thin glass, optical signals can be transferred almost loss-free at highest data rates over the printed circuit board without cross-talk problems. Moreover, the planar waveguide technology offers the chance to integrate passive optical elements (filters, couplers, splitters etc) into the thin glass.

New applications within the area of optical signal processing and signal transmission can be developed around the basis of PPC’s new OPTOBOARD“ Technology.
